A portable generator that won't start is frustrating, but often the solution is quick and easy. Before you contact our support team, try these top three fixes. These are the most common issues we solve, and they are fully demonstrated in our How to Start and Use video guide.
1. Fuel and Oil Level Issues
Is Your Generator Not Starting Due to Fuel?
- Check the Fuel Valve:Ensure the valve is turned to the ON position.
- Is the Fuel Fresh? Stale gasoline is the biggest culprit for a generator not starting. If your fuel is older than 30 days, drain it and refill with fresh gas.
Low Oil Sensor Trip
If the engine starts for a second and then shuts off, the low oil sensor may have been triggered. This safety feature prevents catastrophic engine failure. Check the dipstick and top off the oil immediately.
2. Choke and Start Procedure Errors
Correct Choke Position
Follow the choke procedure precisely:
- Cold Start: Choke must be in the CLOSED/START position.
- Warm-Up Transition:Once the engine is running smoothly, you must slowly move the choke to the OPEN/RUN position. Leaving the choke closed will flood the engine and cause it to stall.
3. No Power Output? Check the Breakers
Breaker Tripped
If your generator is running perfectly fine, but there is no electricity coming from the outlets, a surge or overload may have tripped the circuit breaker. This is a common situation when starting high-load items.
- Turn the breaker" OFF", remove the excessive electrical load, and then turn it back "ON".
